A CAPACITY field took part in the annual Sparke Helmore Triathlon on Newcastle Foreshore yesterday, with 1200 competitors taking part in 46 categories.
It was good news for the Hunter Medical Research Institute, which gets the proceeds from the day.Nathan Stewart, of Redhead, staved off a challenge to beat Sydneysider Tim Porter home, retaining his unofficial "King of the Foreshore" title, earned by winning the Newcastle Olympic Distance race in November and last month's Foreshore Triathlon."It was a pretty tough hit-out and it wasn't an easy win," Stewart said."I hurt the whole way through and really had to work for it."Adam Conquest, of Bondi, took third place.Cooranbong 16-year-old Steph Austin won the women's race ahead of Merewether's Caroline Cooksley. Lake Macquarie's Juliana Bahr-Thompson was third.Bevan Leach, of Cooks Hill, was the men's winner in the shorter race and Waverley's Elizabeth Tenney was the women's champion.
