LAST week Cara West completed her first triathlon, having prepared for the event's cycling leg with a daily commute from Footscray to the CBD.

Ms West first began riding when she lived in London 18 months ago and her partner Brad is also a keen cyclist.

"I ride to work because it's quicker than public transport, it's free . . . and keeps you fit," she said.

And there are no problems with getting ready for work as her office provides showers and lockers.

She rides mostly on bike paths but often cycles along popular Beach Road at weekends.

"I think that cyclists and motorists both need to become more aware of one another on the roads. There needs to be more education on both sides," she said.

Ms West said the separated Copenhagen lanes on some routes into the city were excellent to use but it was difficult to find out where they were.

"When I was in London, the city's public transport website had information for trains and trams and bikes. I think Metlink needs to have guides and bike routes on its website too."
